Jeff Merritt Out at St. Anthony's

(Breaking News)

On Wednesday afternoon, AlamoCityHoops confirmed that St. Anthony's administration has terminated Head Basketball Coach Jeff Merritt, effective immediately. The saga that is St. Anthony's basketball has had several twists and turns over the last few weeks, and this move comes as the latest for a program that is near disarray.

Multiple sources have confirmed to AlamoCityHoops that the overall situation of St. Anthony's, having top national prospect Charles Bassey, along with four other teammates (Ousmane Ndim, Jordan Persad, Obi Prosper, and Sam Chaput) recently ruled ineligible by TAPPS, was not the sole factor in this decision. It was as a result of Coach Merritt's actions on Tuesday evening.

With St. Anthony's hosting Beeville Jones at the Hive, Merritt made the decision to have Charles Bassey enter the game. He didn't start, but came off the bench. Only Bassey, not any of the other four players dressed at all for participation. Unfortunately, Bassey is still ineligible, and that did not change for last night's contest. With all the bureaucracy and behind the scene politics brewing, Merritt came to a breaking point, sources confirmed. He felt that the administration was not taking enough of a stand in defense of his top national prospect, so he decided to do so. By inserting Bassey into the game, Merritt felt that this was a resounding stand towards his position of having Charles Bassey reinstated.

Less than 24 hours later, their was a resounding decision, and this one came from the top. Right or wrong, it did not sit well with St. Anthony's administration, and the decision was made to part ways with Merritt.

There was no confirmation on who will be leading the Yellow Jackets going forward, but sources also confirmed to AlamoCityHoops that the Yellow Jackets are still set to play in the South San Tournament on Thursday.

Before this news broke on Wednesday, there was tremendous speculation that the Yellow Jackets could be on the way out of TAPPS and looking to join a different league. That is still a very real possibility, as the school, administration, and most importantly, kids, try to get a grasp on a season that is spinning out of control.
